Preaching to the Few
February 20, 2006
I love church services in wintery weather. In Fayetteville they were some of my favourites because of their informality and intimacy. Last night we had twenty people. I didn't robe, but preached in jeans, a sweater, and snow boots. We did have an organ, though! We even had our little fellowship time afterward and most everyone stayed around even longer than usual. And 11 of the 20 then went out for dinner even after that and it was splendid fun. There is a special sacredness to these services.
I'm glad I got to preach the sermon. I wish more could have heard it. This sermon is my most developed response to the attack on our human dignity by the Metropolitan Library Commission. Some of these thoughts will be boiled down in an open letter I plan on writing. But this is my developed, spiritual response.
The ice and snow have been so lovely!
Smaller crowds seem to me to be more intimate and provide a chance for more open and honest conversation.
