The Anniversary of an Interesting Experiment
June 30, 2006
The last time Independence Day fell on a Tuesday and we all had both Monday and Tuesday off, my friends and I decided to have a Five Day Party. I hosted. Folk even drove in from out-of-state to attend.
We began with a rousing party on Friday night and ended with breakfast on Wednesday morning. About half-a-dozen folk stayed the whole time, though we would have around 30 or more some evenings. At one point the party even drove to Norman and hung out all together for the afternoon.
What did we do for five days? We drank. Until we ran out of money. We were all poor college and grad students or early in our careers. We had a barbecue. We played lots of old video games. I remember one round of Super Mario Brothers 3 lasting about eight hours. We also watched bad movies. Charlie Bates had recommended that we intentionally draw up a list of bad movies and rent them to watch over the course of the weekend. Some of the bad movies were fun to watch with the group and others were simply bad, bad, bad.
The last couple of days weren't all that fun, but we determined to stick it out. And when the last folk left that Wednesday morning we vowed two things: 1) to not see each other for about a week and 2) never to try a five day party again.
This event, like most, sort of gains in reflection. At any given moment over the five days somebody would be around drinking and talking. And also at any given moment somebody would be sleeping in the guest room. I still have a mini-album of photos you took of me throughout that summer (my last in OK) one of which is of me sleeping in the guest room with the tv on. Perfectly captured on the screen is, inexplicably, Jerry Springer giving his final thoughts.
It should be noted that we also went to see the Patriot. That sort of became the culmination of the bad movie experiment.
I'd do it again. I might regret it, but I'd be game.

I remember this! That was so great when you guys came and hung out with me and Jamie at the car dealership! I think you even "had some words" with a slime ball or two. AND I thought you had a crush on my friend. :) Fun times.

yeah, funny funny
I did argue with the shop manager. It was a quite butch moment for me. I don't usually argue with folk like that.
