Star Trek
May 11, 2009
Well, I finally got to see it last night after church. And overall I thought it as okay.
Some parts I liked. I was very pleased with the casting (though Eric Bana seemed underused and Winona Ryder was just distracting in a part she was too young for), especially of the major characters who will continue into the future.
But I also rolled my eyes a number of times at things that were corny, sappy, silly, etc.
It got better as it went along and by the end I was okay with it. It had to go through all the introductory and transitioning stuff. So it rebooted and rebooted in a way that I expect the next movie to be really good. It was a good set-up then.
I also was intrigued by the constantly shifting style of Star Trek. Contrast this with Star Trek The Motion Picture. Wow! what a difference. The high brow, cerebral sci-fi of the 70's is long past. Also, there was no social commentary, which has been a staple of the Star Trek franchise. Does that mean that now all we have is adrenaline driven action adventure? Well, Star Trek was also a lot more than that, so we'll see how this holds up. An action adventure series will make money, but it could lose its way.
