I Never Thought I'd Live in THAT Country
January 03, 2010
I just opened up my Explorer to read on the headline of the NYTimes:
U.S. Intensifies Screening for Travelers From 14 Nations
By ERIC LIPTON
Citizens from nations including Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Nigeria will face intensified screening, but U.S. citizens and most others will not.
I never thought I'd live in a country that did that, that selected people out in this way. I've watched this happen as I entered into and left Israel, where they have unashamedly and unapologetically profiled for decades (and been successful at stopping airline terrorism).
But success as saving lives is not the supreme value in a democratic republic. And as I watched Arabs being humiliatingly searched by Israeli security, I was so proud to be in a country that would never do that, that would never sacrifice basic human decency for security.
I guess I was wrong.
And wrong to vote for this administration? Better than the other choice probably. But so far from our hopes, the change that many believed in.
You're using Explorer?!
