Perceptive and timely words from TR

In a column entitled "Good Luck to the Anti-Bolshevists" published in the Kansas City Star on September 12, 1918, Theodore Roosevelt wrote these words that I think are perceptive about the nature of societies and governments, and quite timely to the political situation we find ourselves here near the end of 2013:

The absolute prerequisite for successful self-government in any people is the power of self-restraint which refuses to follow either the wild-eyed extremists of radicalism or the dull-eyed extremists of reaction.
