"Baby, I can see your halo"
February 27, 2015
Number 24 in my series of listening through our cd collection.
So, let me confess that I've underestimated Beyonce.
Michael is the Beyonce fan in our household. A rather excitable fan at that. I've enjoyed listening to some of her songs on the radio, but haven't thought much about her.
As I listened to her albums carefully the last few days I was struck, particularly as I wore headphones and really focused on the sound, was how these are perfect pop songs. Maybe that was one of my problems in the past, because perfection is overrated.
I also read a couple of articles analyzing her music and videos. One was about a college class entitled "Politicizing Beyonce" which concludes, among other things, that "she draws up the reality of intersectionality and what feminism means for women of color."
Another interpreted her albums as standing within the tradition of protest music. "Beyoncé is part of a tradition of black women's musical expressions of personal and political discontent ranging from singers like Nina Simone and Odetta to MCs Lauryn Hill and Jean Grae." Well, now, I had never thought of her that way.
So, this project continues to bear fruit, as I explore corners of our cd collection that I've under-appreciated.
