Petals of Blood

Petals of BloodPetals of Blood by Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Browsing through the neighborhood used bookstore in June, I picked up this novel. Last year I read Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o's Devil on the Cross and didn't care for it. I thought I should give him a second try, as his international reputation is so high.

A few weeks ago when the longlist for the alternative Nobel came out with him on it, I decided I'd read one more book of his before the voting period ended to see if I had revised my opinion.

At first I liked this book a lot, then I got stuck in the long conversations and monologues and at times preachy politics. Just as I thought I would set the book aside, I became engrossed in its story and read through to the end.
